Erasmus+ Invited Expert: Cappadocia, AI, and the warmest of welcomes

A true 21st century school
They say travel broadens the mind, and I couldn’t agree more. But sometimes, it also fills the heart. My recent adventure as an Erasmus+ Invited Expert led me to Nevşehir Halil İncekara Bilim ve Sanat Merkezi in Turkey, a school so special that it redefines what education can look like.
Imagine stepping into a school where every classroom is equipped with the latest cutting-edge technology. The English language classroom alone is dreamlike, with its cozy reading nook and theater curtains that set the stage for imagination to thrive. Then there’s the art room, the science lab, 3D printers, and not one but two music classrooms. “This is a school for gifted children,” my incredible host Esma explained, and it was immediately clear that Turkey invests not only in education but in nurturing young minds through critical thinking and experiential learning. Their holistic approach extends beyond the walls of the classroom, encouraging students to spend time outdoors and explore learning in dynamic, meaningful ways.
I had the privilege of working with both teachers and students, and if there’s one thing that stood out, it was their warmth and enthusiasm. The teachers were open, curious, and eager to learn. The students? A whirlwind of energy, creativity, and excitement. We delved into AI tools like Gamma and MagicSchool, explored the magic of ChatGPT, and discussed how these tools can save time while enhancing education. The response was overwhelming—teachers were keen to integrate these technologies into their lessons, and I have no doubt they will make brilliant use of them.
Cappadocia – More than just hot air balloons
And then, there was Cappadocia.
For the second time in my life, this breathtaking region opened its arms to me, while its people opened their hearts. Cappadocia is a dreamscape that appears on almost every traveler’s bucket list, and for good reason. The fairy chimneys, the sweeping valleys, and of course, the hot air balloons painting the sky at dawn—it’s a place that leaves you in awe. Exploring Üçhisar Castle, wandering through the Dream Valley, and standing amidst landscapes that look like they belong to another planet were experiences I will never forget.
But beyond the scenery, it’s the people that make a place truly unforgettable. As an Erasmus+ Invited Expert, I’ve been lucky to see some of the world’s most incredible places. But even more than that, I’ve been lucky to meet some of the most incredible people. This time, I had the honor of meeting the Provincial Director of National Education, Mr. Yazıcı. Our conversation about the similarities and differences between the Croatian and Turkish education systems was eye-opening, and we shared ideas on what needs to change for a brighter future for our children.
Esma: The beginning of a wonderful frindship
And then, there’s Esma.
Nothing could have prepared me for the warmth and hospitality of my host, whom I now consider a dear friend. Esma is a perfect coordinator, an amazing teacher, and one of the most intelligent and kind-hearted people I have met. She ensured that my stay was seamless, my experience unforgettable, and my heart full.
Erasmus+ has given me countless experiences that remind me why I do what I do. It has brought me lessons, adventures, and new perspectives. But above all, it has introduced me to people who enrich my life, make me smile a little brighter, and remind me what truly matters. And for that, I am grateful.
