Diocletian’s Palace is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a true treasure trove of cultural heritage. A day trip to Dubrovnik

It takes around 5 hours to get from Split to Dubrovnik by bus and about 4 hours by car, but this incredible town is well worth a visit. Not only was it the main filming location for King’s Landing, the capital of the Seven Kingdoms in the TV show Game of Thrones, but Dubrovnik is also one of the most beautiful cities in Croatia and the entire Adriatic coast.

Best beaches in Split

Beaches Bačvice, Kašuni, and Bene are located at a walking distance from the city centre. The sea here is crystal clear while the beaches are pebbled and clean, so you can quickly imagine yourself taking in the rays of sunshine and relaxing at the seaside after your morning lessons at one of our Erasmus+ teacher training courses.

Island hopping

Split has one of the biggest ports in Croatia and it is perfectly located close to many central Dalmatian islands which makes it a wonderful starting place for taking a ferry and island hopping. Frequent ferry lines take you to the islands of Brač, and Šolta, while a katamaran will take you to the beautiful town of Hvar on the island of Hvar.

Croatian cuisine is famous for the flavours of its exquisite fish, spit-roasted meat, traditional pašticada, delicious pasta and fresh Mediterranean vegetables garnished with the scents of rosemary, thyme and basil. Do not miss visiting one of traditional taverns that offers seafood delicacies caught the same morning from the Adriatic sea and end your lunch with Dalmatian pastries like rožata or rafioli.

Split has beautiful Mediterranean warm, mild, sunny climate meaning that we get to enjoy over 2700 sunny hours per year.

Spring is beautiful and pleasant with many sunny days, and light breeze, while temperatures move between 12 and 22 degrees Celsius. Summers are extremely sunny and hot with temperatures moving between 20 and 40 degrees Celsius with an average temperature of 28.

Split has beautiful autumn with pleasant October and its 15 degrees Celsius, and then sees several colder months with temperatures dropping from 8-12 degrees Celsius during November and December. Winter months of January and February are the coldest months with temperatures dropping as low as 5 degrees Celsius.

Make sure to bring your sunglasses as we wear them even when it rains. B-) We’re Dalmatians. That’s our thing.

Airport is located only 25 kilometres from Split and is extremely well connected with other airports around Europe especially during high season which lasts from June to September in Split and the rest of Croatia. There are frequent flights between Split and Zagreb as well if there is a need for a connecting flight. If high season is not your favourite time to travel, there are available flights all year round, and Split is equally charming travel destination in all seasons.

Getting from Split Airport to the city centre is also quite easy. There are two options if you want to take a bus from the airport; a shuttle bus and a public bus number 37 (Trogir – Split Sukoišan bus station).

Due to frequent flights, the shuttle bus leaves approximately 45 minutes after a plane lands and it takes about 45 minutes to get to the city centre. It will take you directly to the bus terminal in Split (located in the main port). The ticket costs 8 € and it is possible to buy it online or from the driver. Please prepare cash as it is not possible to buy a ticket with your credit card on the bus.

The public bus leaves every 20 minutes and takes 55 min to the centre of Split with several stops. The price of the ticket is 2 € if you buy it online or 4 € if you buy it from the driver (again, please prepare cash).

Each course starts on a Sunday afternoon giving teachers plenty of time to plan their trips well and get to our classroom on time.

Getting to Split by bus

Bus terminal is located in the main city port. You might have found a cheaper plane ticket to one of other bigger cities in Croatia that have airport, like Zagreb, Zadar or Dubrovnik. The tickets can be bought online while one way ticket does not cost more than about 20-25 €. While Zadar is located only 2.5 hours from Split, rides from Dubrovnik and Zagreb take about 5 hours. The lines are quite frequent with a bus leaving every hour from Zagreb, and at least 5 times a day from Zadar and Dubrovnik. The buses are usually air-conditioned, have free wi-fi and comfortable. If you like to travel carefree, we highly recommend this option. After you reach Split, we would advise taking a taxi to your accommodation since the terminal is located some 15 minutes (on foot) from the city centre.

Getting to Split by train

Possible, but not recommended. Trains in Croatia tend to be late, tend to be very slow and uncomfortable. If you do opt for this kind of travel, the train is going to take you right next to the bus terminal, at the port. Train tickets from Zagreb cost about 25 €. Although they claim that the ride takes about 6 hours, the reality is much, much longer than that.

Getting to Split by Car

Car pooling is another green travel option that Erasmus+ loves and awards you with bigger budgets. So getting to Split is quite easy as the main A1 motorway will take you from Zagreb to Split within approximately 4 hours long pleasant ride. There are many petrol stations along the way to stop for a coffee or to stretch your legs and you can truly enjoy and admire the nature of our beautiful country along the way. Tolls cost 24 € in one direction.

Once you get to Split, we can direct you to free parking very close to the city centre. Eache course takes place in the center of the city so there is no need to worry about walking far to get to your classroom.

Many Erasmus+ participants bring their families along. While you’re having the time of your life attending one of our professional development courses, they could be having the time of their lives exploring Split and its surrounding area. It has a lot to offer for everyone.

If you’re traveling with small kids, there are many children’s playgrounds like the one in Bacvice (right above the main sandy beach), one in Dobri, Zvončac, Varoš, and Skalice residential areas.

A day trip to one of the islands by ferry can also be a great idea for a family trip as a ferry ride usually doesn’t take longer than 50 minutes and takes you directly to the islands of Brač or Šolta and their amazing beaches.

If you like to spend your time in the open air, Marjan forest Park is a beautiful hill, a walking distance from the centre with a tiny Zoo and a beautiful Botanical garden.

So catch a small open air tourist train (kids love it) that takes you to the sandy Bene beach.

There are many cinemas located in our three shopping centres as well as food courts if you want to grab a quick bite and just go shopping.

MAY – SEPTEMBER

• Pack a swimsuit as you could go to the beach any time between May and late October. Make sure you ask your host to give a beach towel if you haven’t brough your own. Wear sunscreen as the sun gets quite strong during the day.

• Always carry a bottle of water with you to avoid getting dehydrated
• There are many open air festivals, concerts and theatre plays going on during this time and we’ll make sure you know of them all once you get here

OCTOBER – APRIL

• Bring layers of clothes as it might be a bit chilly in the morning and then get quite warm later during the day
